Identity of God Lesson #2

God the Father

Intro: Do you think you look more like your father or your mother and why?

Study

  1. Matt 28:19, 2 Cor 13:14 God is clearly identified in the Bible as three distinct persons in one, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, known as the Trinity.
    1. 1 Cor 8:6 In this series on the identity of God, we want to look at each of the three persons of God, so we can better understand the true identity of who God is.
      1. Gen 1:1, Romans 1:20 God created all of the world, the universe, all that is, was spoken into existence by God the Father.
      2. Gen 1:27, Psalms 139:14 Every person who has ever lived, or ever will live is uniquely created by God.
    2. Deut 30:19 God is in ultimate control of everything in the world, except for the free will of man, man is free to make his own decisions, and every decision has a result.
  2. Gal 4:6, Psalms 27:10 One of the most important aspects of God the father is that God desires to have a personal relationship with us as his sons and daughters.
    1. Psalms 68:5 Many struggle with trusting God because their earthly father left them, was not there for them, or abused them in some way.
      1. Joshua 1:5 God wants us to know that he is the perfect father, that he will never leave us, abandon us, or turn against us.
      2. Heb 12:5-11 As the perfect father, God will protect us, provide for us, discipline us, guide us, and bless us, if we choose to surrender and follow God.
    2. Matt 18:12-14,Gal 6:7 The results of us turning from God and going our own way is a life full of problems, emptiness and loneliness, but if we choose to surrender to God the father, and follow him, our lives will be blessed in every way.

Discussion

  1. What are some of the reasons atheists, and other Godless people give as to why they don’t believe God created the world? How should we respond to them?
  2. Who here has struggled with trusting God because of neglect, abandonment, or abuse from your earthly father? if so why is it hard for you personally to trust God?
  3. What are some of the ways your life has been better since you accepted Christ and have followed him?
  4. Is there anyone here tonight who needs to surrender an area of your life to God the father? if so what area is it? what has been holding you back?

End: Pray for all who need healing in their lives from abandonment, hurt or abuse from an earthly father, then pray for any who need to receive salvation from God the father.
